In recent years, the Kouign Amann pastry has taken the Artisan Baking world by storm! It was originally created in Brittany, a region in western France, in a town called Douarnenez. The legend goes that around 1860, a Baker was running very short on different products to sell in his bakery, so he began experimenting by rolling extra butter and sugar into different bread doughs. In the Breton language, Kouign Amann translates essentially to "butter cakes"! It is everything, and then some, that you would expect from an exquisite expression of French Pastry --buttery, flaky, sweet and deeply caramelized. It is brilliant in it's simplicity! Kouign Amann is most definitely on a very short list of the very finest pastries the world has to offer!
